Souls were a complex concept. Created by “something” “somewhere”; It was such a perfect and complex creation, that It had to be divided into before falling to Earth to inhabit a body. The body, as Plato would say, was its prison, but it was also its Heaven, the place in which It would experience pain, joy, distress, hatred and love.
Two parts of the same soul were called soul-mates and the possibility of finding yours wasn’t as big as you would expect. Sometimes one part fell before the other and by the time you were old enough, your soul-mate would already be dead; sometimes, your soul-mate would be in a part of the world you would never, ever visit.
…sometimes they were just around the corner, but you were never able to figure it out.
But sometimes, you did meet them and…all it took was one look and you instantly knew it. One look and your heart-rate would speed up, your hands would start to sweat and your world would be reduced to that person that was literally part of yourself.

Kurt was seven years old when he met him.
Cheesy as it may have been, it happened in a playground. After much begging and manipulation on his part, his dad had agreed to let him go to the park alone; his mom had been death for six months now and his dad was too busy at the shop to accompany him anywhere.
Kurt had been in the swings at the moment, happily singing a song his mom had taught him, and it was 3 in the afternoon; Kurt remembered it because he’d looked at his little power-rangers watch just before he heard that voice, so high and innocent at the moment.
“Who are you?” He’d asked. And when Kurt turned around…it was the weirdest feeling in the world. His little hands started to shake so badly that he actually felt to the ground, but his heart was beating so furiously that he didn’t even feel the pain. His hands started to sweat and his eyes filled with tears and then when that face appeared in his line of vision he…he just knew it, even before he knew what it meant.
“Kurt Hummel” He whispered, entranced by the beautiful features of the little kid that had rushed to his side when he fell.
“Are you an angel?” And he asked that with such innocence and wonder that Kurt actually laughed, making the little boy pout heavily.
“No, I’m not” Then, Kurt sat up. “Ouch…” He complained, rubbing his back with the hand he hadn’t scrapped.
“You look like one” The kid stated “Are you okay? You fell real hard”
“I think so…” Then he looked at his eyes and maybe it was just a second, maybe it was days…but Wow, time just disappeared as he stared into the green orbs.
“I’m Sebastian Smythe and I’m seven years old” The boy affirmed proudly, holding out his hand to help him up.
“I didn’t ask your name” Kurt said, not unkindly.
“Well, considering I’ve decided you’re going to be my best friend, you needed to know that” Kurt looked up at him curiously, just noticing he was taller than him, and tilted his head.
“You did?”
“Yes”
“Why?”
“Because you’re the prettiest boy I’ve ever seen, so you have to be my best friend” At that, Kurt scowled.
“Boys are not pretty”
“That’s why I asked if you were and angel” Sebastian said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world “But now I know you aren’t…and I know you’re not a girl ‘cuz girls are icky and you’re not icky…so you must be a boy”
“…You’re weird” Kurt decided, making Sebastian pout “But I like weird, so I’m going to be your best friend” With that, his pout disappeared and a huge smile appeared on his face, making Kurt feel warm and funny inside.
“Awesome!” The kid exclaimed, beaming down at him.
At that moment, Kurt had smiled too, even if he was a little shy because he had two teeth missing, and…well, Sebastian had become his best friend.
Sebastian was in his mind most of the time. He dreamed with him, he woke up thinking about him, he talked about him at home, at school…and even though his dad didn’t want to admit it, he’d known what was going on. Kurt would get an unpleasant feeling in his tummy whenever he spent more than three days without seeing, or at least talking, to Sebastian, and as far as he knew, the other boy felt the same way.
Sometimes, weird things happened. Sometimes, he would feel a sudden sting in his knee or in his hand and later he would find out that Sebastian had hit himself just in those places. Sometimes he would fall asleep crying without really knowing why and later he would find out that Sebastian had had a bad day. Sometimes he would just say Sebastian’s name and feel the sudden urge to call him…and when he did, Sebastian would just cry on the phone, breaking Kurt’s little heart.
But the weirdest thing happened when Kurt turned eight and his dad made the mistake of organizing a party for him:
“Bas, you came!” He’d been the last one to arrive, and Kurt had been anxious. He didn’t have friends other than Sebastian, mostly because all of the other kids loved to make fun of him, and he was always afraid that the bigger kids would hit him or start insulting him.
“Of course I did, Kurty” Sebastian smiled a big, toothless grin, making Kurt laugh and wrap his arms around his friend.
What neither of them noticed, was that the bigger kids of Kurt’s class were standing there, staring at their display of affection, silently hating them…Kurt just took Bas’ hand and guided him towards his pile of gifts and then towards the table where Burt had put some food.
It happened almost at five, although Kurt wasn’t completely sure about that. They’d been playing hide and seek for a while and it was Kurt’s turn to hide. When he heard Sebastian walking away, he moved from his place and started running as far as he could towards the safe-point…and then, someone stuck his leg in front of him and made him fall. Kurt, not knowing what was going on, had put his hand in front of his body to protect his face, but the impact had managed to break his arm…
…at that moment, two screams had been heard in the Hummel household.
Burt had rushed all the kids out of the house and had put Kurt inside the car…and then he’d noticed that Sebastian was still crying and whimpering and clutching his arm tightly against his chest…the same position Kurt was in. At that moment, Burt had had no choice but to call Sebastian’s parents and tell them that he was going on and that they had to pick Sebastian up at the hospital.
Burt didn’t know at the time that that would be the last time in ten years that Kurt would see Bas’ face.
